Ever since the majority of humans began to become (as a majority) consciously aware that that there was a whole other ‘world/realm’ beyond planet Earth (around the time of the scientific revolution around 1500 A.D. and beyond). Humanity had dreamed and longed to find a way to leave their Earth to explore this unbelievably large place.
In the 1950’s A.D. that dream became a reality with the invention of the first successful rocket caable of escaping Earth's gravity; the first living earthlings (specifically fruit flies and monkeys) officially left the Earth’s atmosphere (that is, the first heaven stated in the Bible) and then humans officially entered this new forbidden unreachable heaven they had longed to reach: which is now called outer space or the rest of the physical universe beyond planet Earth (the second heaven; most likely referred to in the Bible).
Humanity had done it: they had reached this new reality and could see their world for what it really was for the first time: a big blue 3-D globe covered in clouds floating in this massive new reality: they could also see the Moon and Sun for what they really were: not just 2-D circles dangling in the sky but massive balls: whole new worlds like their own very very far away also floating in this new reality:
This became even more of a reality .when in 1969 A.D., humans actually landed on the first foreign celestial object in the universe: the moon and walked on an alien surface for the first time in all of known history. Since then, humans have continued to ventured and explore the moon, sent robots to other neighboring planets: Venus and Mars to explore their surface. And even now send spacecrafts to explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and even to the edge of the very solar system. With future intentions to one day personally explore and even possibly colonize these alien worlds.
But one question humans doing these things never really ask is: What does the creator of the solar system think of his 'Earthling' humans leaving the Earth he specifically created for them to live in and venturing into his second heaven to explore his other celestial objects In his universe? Even with future plans to colonize them one day?
Is space travel a sin/wrong?
While the Bible does not directly talk about space travel; Since it was impossible by all means known for ancient societies to escape Earth’s gravity (let alone even fly in the atmosphere/sky); it was not really discussed/an issue 2,000+ years ago.
However, while The Bible does not mention space travel directly it does hint at the concept of humans being given the Earth and what that means for humans leaving the Planet:
Humans
were created to be on Earth and God gave Earth to them as their
home/responsibility
One thing that’s pretty clear in the Bible is that God created Earth and all life in it (at least as it is now) for his human creations: as he tells them when he creates them on the 6th day to rule and dominate all life on Earth and the planet itself:
Genesis 1:28
“...fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
As covered in more detail in the article ‘Should Christians care for the Earth and the life on it?’ God strongly hints in various places through his word that one of the major reasons he made humans was to own and care for the Earth and all life on it he created; this seems to be one of the main reasons he made Adam in the first place:
Genesis 2:5-15
“Now…there was no one to work the ground,…Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,…he…took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden (a place on Earth) to work it and take care of it.”
So it’s safe to conclude God’s desire and plan for his human creations, in general, is to stay on Earth and care for it, with this being concluded what does this mean for human trying to leave Earth to explore and travel in space?
He later reveals that he indeed gave the planet Earth to humans: however, he also says that along with giving humans planet Earth, the rest of the ‘heavens’ (including the second heaven known today as outer space/the rest of the physical universe and beyond) belongs to him:
Psalm 115:16
“The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to mankind.”
Through king David, God reveals (and is confirmed in other places in the Bible) that he did give planet Earth for his human creations to have and rule over: HOWEVER he says the highest heavens (that is definitely referring to anything past Earth’s atmosphere in modern terms) belong to God and GOD ALONE to have and rule!
So by saying this, he is basically saying God never gave humans the authority to also have and rule anything beyond Earth’s atmosphere: this defintily includes the second heaven ,known as space/the physical universe today, and anything in it.
So considering all this; Could this mean by traveling to space (the second heaven of the Bible) and trying to actually land and claim lands/dominate/control these other celestial bodies (like the Earth’s natural satellite: The Moon, Venus, Mars, Saturn’s natural satellite Titan etc.) humans are unintentionally sinning and defying God’s command to only rule/stay on the Earth as of the present?
It could!
Physical
clues it could be a grave sin
There some clues that human space travel (especially long distances, like to the moon or farther) is a sin and wrong for humans to do in this present age:
It’s no secret that outer space is very VERY dangerous for physical organic beings that come out of Earth’s protective atmosphere. Since one of the reasons God made the Earth was to provide a safe protective home for the life he later made on Earth from the conditions of outer space (as partially covered in one section of the article 'Examples of reality looking designed' article [specifically the 'Very finely balanced and fine-tuned planet Earth' part]), when one of these living beings leaves Earth’s atmosphere they also leave the life-supporting protection they need to remain alive. So, along with stepping into this new reality, humans encounter a whole new host of problems they didn’t even know they could have:
Deadly amounts of Radiation
The solar system is full of radiation, on Earth a living being is well protected from most of this radiation due to the ozone layer in the atmosphere and the magnetosphere produced by Earth’s outer core: and is pretty much safe.
However, once out from that protection, a living being is exposed to much much more radiation: radiation is deadly to living organic beings because it corrupts the D.N.A. inside cells/destoys cells themselves causing cancer, radiation poisoning, and death.[1A]
No oxygen to breath
While the closets thing on Earth to this is being under water and drowning or even being buried alive underground and afixiating on soil, there is no oxygen at all (or really any matter) in space:
You leave that behind when you leave the atmosphere behind; because of this a living being from Earth would die in minutes (if not mere seconds) from asphyxiation.[1B]
Deadly temperatures and no atmopheric pressure
Since Earth’s atmosphere (primarily due to the greenhouse effect and other factors) keeps a life-supporting temperature (around between 48.89°C (120°F) to -89.4°C (-120°F)) that makes it able to sustains life on its' surface, when leaving the atmosphere you also leave this protective temperature control behind, and much more harsher temperatures appear. From intense heat in the sunlight (about 121 °C or 250 °F) to freezing cold in the shade (about -157 °C or -250 °F): its enough to kill pretty much any living being from Earth by instant heat stroke and/or frezzing. [1B] [1C] And if that wasn't enough; due to there being no atmopheric pressure in space (that is the natural pressure of molecules in the atmophere/air constantly pressing down on life on the surface) a living being from Earth would almost instantly have all the water in/on their body begin to boil (like water in their cells, skin, eyes, mouth, ect.) boiling them alive while the pressure of matter inside the body makes their body expand and blow up sort of like a baloon: a very horrific unatural death![1B]
However, it could be argued that well-designed space suits takes care of all these problems so far: they bring oxygen from Earth so an astronaut can breath, reggulate pressure so their water doesnt boil and body does not expand, and helps reflext most of the deadly radiation from reaching the body and helps keep life-supporting temperatures:
While some of the problems are taken care of and a being can live in space without instantly dying a horrific death: that doesn’t mean it’s still not extremely dangerous!
Little
to no gravity (Micro-gravity) On
Earth, the gravity of the planet pulls you towards
its core all the
time: this not only keeps a living being glued to the surface
but also
helps to keep the body functioning normally as God intended it.
However, without that gravity, after exiting the atmophere new and
dangerous problems come up since the human's body is
designed to be pressed on by Earth’s gravity at all times. When that
pressure it taken off bad things begin to happen to the body: Bones and
muscles begin to skrink, the cardiovascular system weakens, and the
immune system weakens: the body begins to slowly corrode away. Though
many of these symptons can be kept from fully happening it takes alot
of exersize in space to keep from happening and even then significant
weakening will still happen and by the time living beings return to
Earth there body would be stuggling to readapt to Earth's gravity:
often needing physical therapy and even medication to recover!
